There have been comments about some homeless treating their animals with cruelty; dogs tied up tightly, twisting to be freed or being hit; skinny dogs/cats in poor health. As in the case of child abuse, such instances of animal abuse clearly call for action. Any such treatment, should be reported to the local Animal Control or Humane Society. They are the agencies that can help rescue these pets.
During the hot days of summer, a call to action includes help for children or animals kept in a closed vehicle. The heat in a vehicle can reach 110+ degrees in a matter of minutes. Children and animals can perish under such extreme conditions. In these situations, call the local police or sheriff because immediate rescue is indicated.
As for the “skinny dogs/cats,” take them pet food. Pets of the Homeless volunteers keep zip lock bags of pet food in their vehicles. The baggies contain biscuits, chew sticks, canned dog/cat food with pop off lids, and a note “Ask for pet food at your local food bank or homeless shelter.” Whenever we see a pet living on the streets, we can help immediately.
We all must be a voice for pets of the homeless. They do not ask for the situations they find themselves in. They need food, medical care, spay/neutering, and kindness. We are a voice for them. Won’t you join us?
