Hello, my name is Shadow and I’m a 4-year-old Labrador mix. My humans and I have been experiencing homelessness, living out of our car in the Martinez, CA area for just about 2 years.

One day, my human noticed how big my ear was. When it ruptured, my human knew I needed to see a vet. My dad reached out to his VA and was given the number to an organization called Feeding Pets of the Homeless. When my human called, an intake interview was done, and once we provided homeless verification, my human was given the number to our local vet so we could make an appointment.

Thankfully, a walk-in exam was approved, and once at the vet’s office, it was determined that I had an ear hematoma. I was sedated, put on some fluids and my ear was repaired and cleaned. I was even sent with an Ecollar – oh, the fun we had!

A couple of months have gone by, and my humans thought it would be nice to call our case manager at Feeding Pets of the Homeless and give her an update. We were no longer homeless, living out of our car. My family got into housing because my human was approved through the HUD-VASH Program, a program for veterans like my dad! My dad says we might not have a table to eat at, but when he looks at me being the happiest of pups, he could live without it.
