I’m a 4-year-old German Shepherd living in a tent with my dad. We are currently experiencing homelessness, and I am also his service dog. My dad has epilepsy, and I am trained to recognize when a seizure may be coming and alert him. I help keep him safe, comfort him when things are difficult, and most importantly, we are family.
A few years ago, I was hit by a car. My dad did not have the money for veterinary care, and my left leg never healed properly. Over time, it continued to cause me pain.
My dad wanted to help me, so he reached out to his social worker, who gave him a list of organizations that might be able to assist. That’s when he found Feeding Pets of the Homeless.
After completing an application, we were connected with a case manager who helped arrange an appointment with a local veterinarian.
The veterinarian took X-rays and determined that my injured leg could not be saved and needed to be amputated. Feeding Pets of the Homeless helped cover the cost of my surgery, and the veterinarian generously provided a $1,900 discount.
My surgery went well, and I was sent back with my dad with medication to manage the pain and inflammation while I heal.
Now I’m recovering by his side, with a lot less pain and an important job to get back to.
