Pet Spending in America and What It Means for Pets of the Homeless

Of Interest to Fur Parents…

In 2024, Americans spent an estimated $152 billion on their pets—demonstrating just how much we value our furry companions. This total includes food, treats, supplies, veterinary care, and a range of other services.

Here’s how that breaks down:
• Pet food and treats: $65.8 billion
• Supplies, live animals, and OTC medicine: $33.3 billion
• Veterinary care and product sales: $39.8 billion
• Other services: $13.0 billion

This continued growth highlights the resilience of the pet industry, even during economic uncertainty.

According to the 2024 American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Pet Ownership and Demographic Survey, the average pet parent spent $1,515 on their pet in both 2023 and 2024, with roughly one-third of that amount going toward veterinary care and related products.

At Feeding Pets of the Homeless, we understand how vital veterinary care is—especially for those facing homelessness. Between 2023 and 2024, we paid an average of $749 per pet to provide emergency care at our network of veterinary hospitals. Thanks to generous discounts extended to us as a nonprofit, we were able to treat 3,286 pets, spending a total of $2,461,437 for these services.

Your support makes this possible—and every dollar goes a long way in helping the pets of those who need us most.
