Pets of the Homeless received a call from a disabled homeless veteran who lives in his vehicle in CA. He receives SSI and has been homeless for the past 15 years. He called extremely concerned about his dog, Gracie, a three-year-old female Pit Bull Terrier who had been hit by a car. He thinks her foot might be broken. We verified his homelessness and got him into an after hours emergency veterinarian.
After the exam, the vet recommended x-rays. We approved this. The x-ray showed a broken paw and leg. We approved an overnight stay (no charge), a splint, medications, and to update his rabies vaccination. We assisted with $341.91 for treatment for Gracie.
We also pre-approved bandage changes on the reusable splint one time a week for the next 4 – 6 weeks at a cost of $310.00.
We received the following email from Gracie’s Dad:

“I cannot express my gratitude for what Pets of the Homeless has done for Gracie and our little family.
The way that I was treated, with dignity and respect…doesn’t come my way often as a member of the transient population.
Her break is pretty severe, as you can see in the X-ray. They have her in a soft cast, money was the reason she wasn’t put into a plaster cast.
The Vets office was awesome. My contact point is a lady named Sue who went above and beyond, reaching out to my life partner beyond the office.
There are good people in the world still. It doesn’t always seem like it.
